Why Security-Widefield Residents Choose Aviso Law for DUI Defense
Our firm is led by a former prosecutor. That background gives us direct knowledge of how the El Paso County District Attorney’s office builds and evaluates drunk driving cases and where to look for weaknesses in the prosecution’s evidence. Knowing what the other side looks for is a meaningful advantage in DUI defense.
Our attorneys also bring active military service records to this work. Attorney Ryan Coward is a former Army JAG officer and current Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves with more than 80 trials in state and federal court. Attorney Kyra Palmer served as an Air Force Judge Advocate and remains a current Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserves, with over 15 years of courtroom experience and more than 40 trials litigated. For the large veteran and active-duty population near Fort Carson and Peterson Space Force Base, that background matters in ways that go beyond the courtroom.
Both attorneys have earned recognition from Super Lawyers and the National Trial Lawyers. We’re aggressive in court and straightforward in client meetings, because you deserve to understand your actual options, not just an optimistic pitch.
What a DUI Conviction Can Cost You in Colorado
Colorado law defines DUI as operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or above. DWAI, or Driving While Ability Impaired, applies at a BAC above 0.05 but below 0.08. Both carry criminal and administrative consequences.
A first-offense DUI in Colorado can mean up to one year in jail, fines up to $1,000, license revocation for up to nine months, up to 96 hours of community service, mandatory alcohol education classes, and ignition interlock device requirements on any reinstated license. Second and subsequent offenses carry mandatory minimum jail time, steeper fines, longer revocations, and extended interlock requirements. A fourth or subsequent DUI becomes a Class 4 felony, carrying up to six years in prison.
The consequences don’t stop at criminal penalties. A drunk driving conviction can affect professional licenses held by nurses, teachers, and other credentialed workers. For Security-Widefield residents connected to Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Space Force Base, or other military installations in the 4th Judicial District, a conviction can trigger a security clearance review with serious career implications. Acting quickly can give you more opportunity to contest those outcomes.
